After 34 years of serving Thanksgiving Dinner to the Livermore Valley it has come to an end. The LCTD Board has pursued many different roads and directions to continue the dinner but feel we can no longer continue the Livermore Community Thanksgiving Dinner. It is with deep sadness that we can on longer offer this service to the community.

We have made friendships that will last a lifetime. What started as a group of friends thinking that we would only feed a few hundred in 1983 to well over 1,000 in 2016, 34 years later. We were a rag tag bunch of 30 somethings wanting to provide a traditional dinner to those that may be alone, seniors, vets or those without the means to provide their own. Also, to provide an opportunity to volunteer and give back to the community in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

For those that were unable to make it to the hall we delivered hot meals to their homes. Last year our volunteers delivered over 500 dinners. This disorganized group never imagined that we would end up with this organized chaos feeding well over 30,000 dinners in our 34 years.

We were often asked “what was the secret of our success?” The heart of our dinner has always been the volunteers. We never turned away a volunteer. We wanted them to share the experience with us and they may not have come down to the hall if they couldn’t help out. Some have been with us every year, others have come and gone and others have grown up and brought their own families to start a new tradition. To quote General John Doolittle “there is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer”. It was true then and will remain throughout time. We would not have been able to feed 250 meals that first year if it wasn’t for our wonderful volunteers. If that first dinner had failed we may not have continued. This last year we had over 500 volunteers sign up for jobs and many more just dropped in.

We would be remiss if we did not mention the many businesses, organizations and individuals that contributed in one way or another to see that this dinner was a success. We are so lucky to live in such a giving community.

We will miss the camaraderie with old and new friends. Thank you all for such an awesome life experience!
